How do painters and decorators get recommended by AI assistants?

Updated · 8 min read · By the SearchCrow team

AI assistants recommend painters and decorators they can describe with confidence: a Google Business Profile with clear service areas, written descriptions of real jobs (rooms, surfaces, prep, finish), an independent listing such as the PDA or Dulux Select Decorators, and reviews that say what was done. Decorating is a visual trade, but assistants work mostly from text, so the decorators who write about their work are the ones assistants can talk about. Turn your photos into words and your memberships into links.

Key takeaways

  • Most decorating questions are planned, not urgent: people compare, ask about costs and ask who's good locally, often weeks ahead.
  • Write up jobs in words, with the location, surfaces, prep and finish, not just a gallery.
  • Link to your PDA, Dulux Select Decorators, Checkatrade or Which? listing so it can be checked.
  • Explain how you price and what's included; it's what people ask most before they get quotes.
  • If you work on older homes, explain how you deal with old paintwork safely.

What do customers ask AI when they're looking for a painter and decorator?

They describe the job and ask who can do it well, what it costs and how long it takes. The prompts below are illustrative examples of the kinds of questions customers ask, not measured search volumes.

IntentExample prompts (illustrative)
Time-sensitive"Need the flat repainted before new tenants move in next week, decorator in Coventry?" / "Decorator who can do end-of-tenancy touch-ups quickly"
Comparison"Is it worth having kitchen cabinets sprayed rather than replaced?" / "Eggshell or satin for woodwork?"
Local"Dulux Select Decorator near Harrogate" / "Painter in Brighton who does exterior render and sash windows"
Price"How much to paint a three-bed house inside?" / "Typical day rate for a decorator in London"
Trust"How do I find a decorator who won't cut corners on prep?" / "Is it safe to sand old paint in a Victorian house?"

Two things set decorating apart. First, specialist work gets specific questions: wallpaper hanging, spraying kitchens and furniture, exterior masonry, heritage paint, commercial repaints. An assistant can only match you to them if you name them. Second, quality is about preparation, and customers know it. People ask how to find someone who won't cut corners, so a decorator who explains their prep process in writing gives an assistant a reason to recommend them.

Where does AI get its answers about painters and decorators?

From your website, your Google Business Profile, trade and manufacturer schemes, vetted directories and the review sites customers use.

Google Business Profile. Google says Business Profiles "can help your products and services to be visible in both AI responses and other Google Search results" (Google Search Central, 2026). Local ranking is based on relevance, distance and prominence, and "more reviews and positive ratings can help" (Google Business Profile Help, 2026).

Painting and Decorating Association (UK). The PDA says its members "are vetted for quality workmanship" and "follow a strict code of practice", and that it will "act as an independent mediator in the event of a dispute". It runs a searchable directory of members (PDA, 2026).

Dulux Select Decorators (UK). A manufacturer-run scheme. Dulux says members are "assessed and accredited as a scheme member by Dulux" and "offer a two-year quality workmanship guarantee", including deposit protection, with a postcode search for customers (Dulux, 2026). If you're a member, it is a strong, specific fact for an assistant to repeat to someone asking for a guaranteed decorator.

Council and safety guidance. Pages about old paintwork shape the trust answers assistants give. Cambridge City Council says lead was used in some paints "until the mid-1960s", warns "don't use dry sandpaper", and suggests calling in a professional firm, pointing people to the PDA (Cambridge City Council, 2026).

Vetted directories (UK).

PlatformHow it works for you
TrustMarkGovernment-endorsed quality scheme; tells homeowners to check registration for the specific trade they need (TrustMark, 2026).
CheckatradeMembers pass up to 12 checks (Fixflo, 2026).
Which? Trusted TradersCredit check, customer references and a trading standards assessment (Which?, 2026).
Buy With ConfidenceCouncil Trading Standards approval with complaints review and references (East Sussex County Council, 2026). Participating areas only.

US equivalents. In the US, firms paid to do work that disturbs paint in homes, childcare facilities and preschools built before 1978 "must be certified in lead-safe work practices", and the EPA runs a search for certified firms (EPA, 2026). If you're certified, say so and link to it. Angi doesn't show businesses without a claimed profile (Angi, 2026), and Yelp does not recommend reviews it suspects were solicited (Yelp, 2026).

AI crawlers. OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers" (OpenAI, 2026). Perplexity uses PerplexityBot (Perplexity, 2026), and Anthropic's Claude-SearchBot indexes content for Claude's search (Anthropic, 2026).

Steps 1 to 3 take a few evenings. Do them first.

  1. Set up your Google Business Profile properly. Use your real business name with no added keywords; Google says "including unnecessary information in your business name isn't permitted" (Google Business Profile Help, 2026). Most decorators work at customers' homes, so hide your address and set your service area. Pick a painting or decorating primary category and list the services you offer. Add photos, but also write a description that names your specialisms.
  2. Write up your jobs, not just photograph them. For each project on your site: the town, the rooms or surfaces, the condition you started with, the prep (filling, sanding, priming, caulking, mist coats on new plaster), the products and finish, and how long it took. Five well-written job pages are more useful to an assistant than fifty unlabelled photos.
  3. Explain how you price. Per room, per day or fixed quote; whether materials are included; what pushes the price up (high ceilings, stairwells, lots of woodwork, colour changes, wallpaper removal); your typical lead time. You don't need numbers if you'd rather not, but you need the explanation.
  4. Link to your memberships and guarantees. PDA, Dulux Select Decorators, TrustMark, Checkatrade, Which? Trusted Traders or Buy With Confidence: link each badge to your listing. If you offer a workmanship guarantee, say how long it is and what it covers. Mention your public liability insurance cover if you're happy to.
  5. Create a page for each specialism. Interior, exterior (render, masonry, timber), wallpapering, kitchen and furniture spraying, period and heritage work, commercial or landlord repaints. If you work on older homes, explain how you deal with old paintwork, for example testing for lead and wet sanding, which matches the council guidance customers find.
  6. Add HousePainter structured data. HousePainter is a schema.org subtype of HomeAndConstructionBusiness (Schema.org). Google asks you to use the most specific type and requires name and address (Google Search Central, 2026). Google also says no special schema is needed for AI features (Google Search Central, 2026), so this is housekeeping, not magic.
  7. Ask every customer for a review that describes the job. "Painted the hallway, stairs and landing, filled every crack and protected the carpets" tells future customers and assistants far more than five stars alone. Google prohibits review incentives and selectively asking happy customers (Google, 2026), and the DMCC Act bans fake reviews and suppressing negative ones in the UK from 6 April 2025 (CMS, 2025).

Also make sure your website doesn't block OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot or Googlebot in robots.txt.

Mistakes that keep decorators out of AI answers

  • Instagram as your only portfolio. Social posts are great for winning work, but captions are short and pages are hard for assistants to rely on. Mirror your best projects as written pages on your own site.
  • "All aspects of painting and decorating". It tells an assistant nothing. Name the services, surfaces and finishes you're good at.
  • Badges with no link. A PDA or Dulux Select logo is a claim; a link to your listing is evidence. If you've left a scheme, remove the badge.
  • No areas in text. Listing the towns and postcodes you cover in plain text matters, because a map image can't be read.
  • Different names in different places. "J Smith Decorating" on Google, "JS Painters" on Checkatrade and "Smith & Son" on Facebook look like three businesses. Use one name.
  • Asking only your happiest customers. Google prohibits selective requests and UK law now restricts it. Ask everyone.

How to check whether AI recommends your decorating business

Do this once a month. It takes about half an hour.

  1. Write 10 questions customers ask: interior and exterior jobs, a specialism such as spraying or wallpaper, two price questions, two trust questions, all with your town.
  2. Ask each in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Claude, and run the same searches in Google to see AI Overviews. Use a private browser window and stay logged out where possible.
  3. Record whether you're named, which decorators are named instead and which sources are cited, such as the PDA, Dulux Select, Checkatrade or a competitor's website.
  4. In Google Search Console, AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic is included in your overall search traffic (Google Search Central, 2026).
  5. Look at what the named competitors have that you don't. It's usually written job descriptions, a listing you haven't claimed, or more detailed reviews.

SearchCrow does this monitoring for you. It asks the major assistants the questions your customers ask, shows when your decorating business is recommended and who appears instead, and tells you which fixes will make the most difference.

FAQ

Why doesn't ChatGPT recommend my decorating business? Usually because your best evidence is in photos, and assistants mostly work from text. A gallery of finished rooms shows quality to a person, but an assistant needs written detail: what you were asked to do, the surfaces and prep involved, the area, and what the customer said. Add that to your site and profiles, and keep your name and areas consistent everywhere.

Does PDA membership or being a Dulux Select Decorator help with AI search? No AI platform has said membership is a ranking factor. But both are independent, searchable listings. The PDA says members are vetted and it will mediate disputes; Dulux Select Decorators are assessed and offer a two-year workmanship guarantee. Linking to your listing gives an assistant a checkable fact when someone asks for a reputable or guaranteed decorator.

Should a decorator publish prices? You don't need a fixed price list, because every room is different. But explain how you price (per room, per day or by quote), what drives the cost, such as prep, ceiling height, woodwork and number of coats, and whether paint is included. That lets an assistant include you when someone asks what decorating costs, rather than skipping you for a business that explains it.

Is it worth mentioning lead paint and period homes? Yes, if you work on older houses. Cambridge City Council notes that lead was used in some paints until the mid-1960s and warns against dry sanding. Explaining how you test for and handle old paintwork answers a real question homeowners ask, and shows you understand period properties.

How long does it take for a decorator to appear in AI answers? There is no published timescale. Each assistant updates its sources differently, and changes to your website, Google profile and reviews have to be picked up first. Make the changes in this guide, ask every customer for a review that describes the job, and recheck the same questions monthly.
