AI assistants recommend pharmacies when they can confirm what you offer, when you're open and that you are a registered pharmacy. List every NHS and private service on its own page with who it's for and how to access it, keep your NHS website profile and Google listing accurate to the hour, and show your GPhC registration on your website. Independents usually lose AI answers because they don't publish what they actually do.
Key takeaways
- Patients ask about a symptom, a service or a time ("pharmacy open now for earache"), not about "community pharmacy services".
- In England, your NHS Profile Manager entry feeds your NHS website and Directory of Services profiles. Keep it as current as your Google hours.
- Pharmacy First covers seven conditions with set age ranges. Each one is a question patients ask.
- Show your GPhC registration number. The EU distance selling logo no longer applies in Great Britain.
- Check monthly what assistants say when asked for a pharmacy like yours nearby.
What do patients ask AI when they're looking for a pharmacy?
They describe a symptom, a service, a time and a place. The prompts below are illustrative examples of the kinds of questions people ask, not measured search volumes.
| Intent | Example prompts (illustrative) |
|---|---|
| Urgent | "Pharmacy open now near me on a Sunday in Bristol", "can a pharmacist treat my daughter's earache without a GP appointment?", "ran out of my blood pressure tablets, what do I do?" |
| Comparison | "Pharmacy or GP for a UTI?", "is it cheaper to get travel jabs at a pharmacy or a travel clinic?" |
| Local | "Travel vaccination clinic at a pharmacy in Didsbury", "pharmacy that does blood pressure checks in Leicester", "pharmacy with a private consultation room near Kings Heath" |
| Price | "How much is the flu jab at a pharmacy?", "private weight loss injection prices at independent pharmacies near me" |
| Trust | "Is [pharmacy name] a registered pharmacy?", "how do I check an online pharmacy is legitimate?" |
Where does AI get its answers about pharmacies?
From the NHS website, the regulator, Google and pharmacy websites. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode use pages that are indexed and eligible to show a snippet, with no extra technical requirements (Google Search Central, 2025).
| Source | What it is | Why it matters for pharmacies |
|---|---|---|
| NHS website "Find a pharmacy" | Search by town, city or postcode in England (NHS, n.d.) | An official source for hours and services, updated from NHS Profile Manager (Community Pharmacy England, n.d.). |
| NHS "How pharmacies can help" | Public explainer of pharmacy services | Lists Pharmacy First conditions and services such as contraception, blood pressure checks and stop-smoking help (NHS, n.d.). |
| GPhC register | General Pharmaceutical Council register of pharmacies and pharmacists | All pharmacies in Great Britain, including online ones, must be registered with the GPhC (Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland, n.d.). |
| MHRA medicine seller register | Register of websites authorised to sell medicines online | The EU distance selling logo stopped being used in Great Britain from 1 January 2021 and is now used only in Northern Ireland (MHRA, n.d.). |
| Google Business Profile | Listing on Search and Maps | Google says complete information, accurate hours and more reviews help local ranking (Google Business Profile Help, n.d.). |
| Your website | Services, hours, booking, prices for private services | Where you explain each service in more depth than any directory. |
| US equivalent | State boards of pharmacy | The FDA tells consumers to check a pharmacy's licence in their state board of pharmacy's database and not to use one that isn't listed (FDA, n.d.). |
The 7-step plan to get your pharmacy recommended
Give every service its own section or page. Pharmacy First, the flu and COVID vaccinations, blood pressure checks, contraception, travel clinic, weight management, ear wax removal, private consultations. For each: who it's for, eligibility or age range, what happens, whether it's NHS or private, the price if private, and how to book or whether walk-ins are fine.
Spell out Pharmacy First condition by condition. The service launched on 31 January 2024. Pharmacies in England can complete care for seven conditions under clinical pathways: middle ear infection (ages 1 to 17), impetigo and infected insect bites (age 1 and over), shingles (18 and over), sinusitis (12 and over), sore throat (5 and over) and uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women aged 16 to 64 (NHS England, n.d.). Patients can come in directly for these without a referral. Distance selling pharmacies don't offer the ear infection pathway. A patient asking an assistant about a child's earache is asking a Pharmacy First question.
Keep NHS Profile Manager accurate. Profile Manager updates both your NHS website and Directory of Services profiles from one place (Community Pharmacy England, n.d.). List every NHS service you provide. For seasonal services such as flu vaccination, add a direct booking link rather than your homepage. Enter bank holiday and Christmas hours well in advance.
Make Google say the same as the NHS. Opening hours, special hours, phone number and name should match your NHS profile and website exactly. A pharmacy shown as open on one source and closed on another is a pharmacy an assistant may avoid naming for "open now" questions.
Show your registration. Put your GPhC registration number and the registered pharmacy's name and address in your website footer or About page, with a link to the GPhC register. If you sell medicines online, don't use the EU distance selling logo in Great Britain; it applies only in Northern Ireland now (MHRA, n.d.).
Add Pharmacy structured data. Schema.org lists Pharmacy as a type under MedicalBusiness (Schema.org, n.d.). Mark up name, address, phone, website and opening hours to match the visible page. Google says AI features need no special markup.
Ask for reviews the same way every time, with no incentive. A card at the counter or a QR code on the bag, offered to every customer who uses a service. Google prohibits incentives for reviews (Google Business Profile Help, n.d.) and selectively asking satisfied customers (Google, n.d.). Since 6 April 2025, UK law bans fake reviews and reviews that conceal an incentive (CMS, 2025), so "10% off for a review" is out. Never confirm in a reply that someone is a patient or mention their medicines.
Also check that robots.txt and any firewall allow OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search (OpenAI, n.d.), PerplexityBot (Perplexity, n.d.) and Claude-SearchBot (Anthropic, n.d.).
Mistakes that keep pharmacies out of AI answers
- A website that says only "prescriptions and advice". Most of what independents offer is invisible.
- Stale holiday hours. If bank holiday or closure hours aren't updated on the NHS profile and Google, patients and assistants get the wrong answer.
- Services listed on Google but not on the NHS profile, or the other way round. Conflicting sources weaken every one of them.
- Private service prices hidden. Price questions then go to chains and online pharmacies that publish them.
- No GPhC number on the website. It's the simplest proof that you're a registered pharmacy.
- Out-of-date logos. The EU distance selling logo no longer applies in Great Britain.
- Review replies that reveal health details. Keep replies general.
How do you check whether AI recommends your pharmacy?
Ask the assistants what patients ask, and record the answers monthly.
- Choose 10 prompts from the table, using your town, your services and your hours.
- Run each in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google (AI Overviews and AI Mode), Gemini, Claude and Copilot, in a logged-out or private window where possible.
- Note whether you're named, whether your hours and services are stated correctly, which pharmacies appear instead, and which sources are cited.
- Fix wrong facts at the source: NHS Profile Manager, Google and your website.
- In Google Search Console, AI feature traffic is included in the Performance report under the "Web" search type (Google Search Central, 2025).
SearchCrow runs these checks for you. It asks the main AI assistants the questions patients ask about pharmacies near you, shows whether your pharmacy is named and which sources they lean on, and suggests what to fix first. It's priced for independent pharmacies and small groups.
FAQ
Why doesn't ChatGPT recommend my pharmacy? Usually because the details people ask about aren't published clearly. Patients ask "pharmacy open now that does Pharmacy First for a UTI" or "travel vaccinations near Didsbury". If your website and NHS profile don't list each service, who it's for, your opening hours and how to book, a pharmacy or chain that states those facts is easier to name. Independents often offer more than they say online.
Where do patients find our opening hours? Often from the NHS website and Google. In England, NHS Profile Manager pushes your hours, contact details and services to your NHS website profile and your Directory of Services (DoS) profile from one place. Keep it, Google and your own website in step, add bank holiday hours early, and update it the same day if you close unexpectedly.
Do online pharmacies still need the distance selling logo? Not in Great Britain. The MHRA says the EU distance selling logo stopped being used in England, Wales and Scotland from 1 January 2021 and is now used only in Northern Ireland. All pharmacies in Great Britain, including online ones, must still be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council, so show your GPhC registration number on your website.
Should we list Pharmacy First on our website? Yes, if you provide it. Since 31 January 2024, pharmacies in England can supply treatment for seven conditions under clinical pathways, and patients can walk in for these without a referral. Give each condition a short section with the age range, what happens at the consultation and your hours, so a patient asking an assistant about a sore throat or shingles can find you.
What structured data should a pharmacy use? Schema.org has a Pharmacy type under MedicalBusiness. Mark up your name, address, phone, website and opening hours, including any special hours, and make sure every value matches the visible page and your NHS profile. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode need no special structured data, so markup confirms facts you already publish rather than adding new ones.
